On coming out as an atheist

I tweeted earlier this morning that, “now, more than ever, it’s important to be out as an atheist – we are normal, friendly people; we are your bus drivers, school teachers, doctors, waitstaff, garbage collectors, lawyers, bank tellers, hair dressers, etc. we are #atheist.” And it really is a critical time to be out as an atheist. Why? I recently received a Facebook message that reminded me of why. It said:

I recently came across your blog . . . and I just wanted to let you know that you are such an inspiration to me, having the courage

Debunking the 10 Commandments

This is a follow-up to a guest post that I did for CFI’s blog, the Course of Reason, which you can find here. I won’t get into the thick of it, but what happened is this: after some back and forth concerning whether the 10 Commandments should be posted in public schools in Giles County, VA, the school board voted (3-2) in favor of displaying an exhibit of documents titled “Foundations of American Law and Government,” which included the 10 Commandments. My cousin was disowned by members of her immediate family because she was dating a black guy and got pregnant (the issue was with the race of the father, NOT that she got pregnant, from what I’ve … read more.

In times of crisis, to what do I, an atheist, turn?

I had a very long talk with a friend of mine a few weeks ago where I admitted that I usually have a hard time defining who I am and what my priorities are, what I want out of my life, etc. But then I told him that there’s one thing to which I’ve always been true: my atheism.

My life story isn’t a pretty one and it’s definitely not an easy one to tell; I can feel my heart pounding even now as I relay it. And before I say anything else, I want to say this: I am … read more.

5 things I took away from the CFI Student Leadership Conference

During the last weekend of June I was fortunate enough to attend the 2011 Center for Inquiry Student Leadership Conference where I met with like-minded individuals from campuses across the country (and even some from Canada!) to discuss issues of activism, humanism, interfaith, online outreach, etc.

When I first arrived in Amherst for the conference, I was buzzing with excitement for what was to come… and justifiably so! We each received a small notebook in which I scribbled over 30 pages of notes throughout the weekend. I jotted down all sorts of things from ideas for events to inspirational quotes … read more.
