The type of atheist that I am

Frequently I find myself adding modifiers to better describe the type of atheist that I am. The two that I use most often are ‘female’ and ‘active.’ Now I’ve gotten a lot of flack from people for using both of those (“well OBVIOUSLY you’re female” and “active? what does that even mean?!”), so here I am explaining why I say the things that I do.

First, I am a female atheist. What does being female have to do with being an atheist? Well, honestly, everything. The fact that I’m female has shaped the world that I’ve grown up … read more.

Wideo Wednesday #5: Updates

Or should I call it Wussy Wednesday? That’s what it feels like… anyways, here are some updates on what’s going on lately, and a plea for your suggestions/ideas!

Ft. Eustis: providing proper resources for soldiers?

Sure, if you’re Catholic, Protestant, or Mormon.

Today I was looking into the possibility of getting in touch with local atheists/freethinkers at Fort Eustis in VA (and I know there are some), so I began browsing this website. The first section that caught my eye was “Soldier & Family Resources” under which I spotted a link for the Fort Eustis Chaplaincy. Curious what it has to offer, I clicked the link; I was not surprised to see that if you’re Catholic, Protestant or Mormon, you’re good to go. Religious education, worship services, family counseling, grief counseling, marriage … read more.

On the insulting nature of insults. NSFW due to foul language.

Updates!

Hello again everybody! So here are some updates on my life, the future of this blog, etc. For starters, I’ve been busy lately and sick to boot, so I’m not doing as good a job of keeping a regular schedule as I’d like. With that said, I’ve decided that I’m going to aim for three posts per week, with one of those being Wideo Wednesday (which I will start posting the transcriptions for). I’ll try to do Monday/Wednesday/Friday posts (a la XKCD), and occasionally I’ll post some special weekend posts.
I’ve also been working on plans and events for my group at William & Mary so that’s been eating up my time like crazy! I’ll be sharing more information on that as it gets closer to the fall semester, don’t worry. It’d be awesome to get some of you out to our events (and everyone needs an excuse to visit the coast of Virginia, right?).
For now, here’s an item off my “things I really really want in my life” wishlist:

Wideo Wednesday #3

Check out this week’s Wideo Wednesday on dogmatism (and thus the importance of skepticism).

If you know of any skepticism programs in your area, leave a comment and let me know about it!

Busy busy busy.

So I promise I’m not trying to neglect this blog right now but I got busy fast and while I keep starting blog posts, I’m having a hard time finishing them. I’m working on a few different ones right now, including my opinion on interfaith, my journey into secular humanism, and what it’s like being a leader of a secular group. And my Wideo Wednesday tomorrow promises to be wonderful as it’s about dogmatism! This week should be exciting so just bear with me.

Atheist images

I was browsing Google images for Harry Potter when I had the thought to plug in “atheist” and see what came up. I’ve picked a few of my favorites to share here:

1.

I’ll have you know, I say “oh my god,” “oh god,” “dear god,” “jesus,” and “jesus christ” when I have sex. I’ve given thought to writing about why “but you say oh my god” is not an argument against atheism.… read more.

Wideo Wednesday #2

One of the things that bothers me the most is alternative medicine. And guess what? There’s a federally-funded organization dedicated to continuing alternative medicine, the NCCAM. Listen to me rant about it.

Celebrity Spotlight: Mark Zuckerberg

I figured since there’s all this buzz about Facebook and Google+ right now, it would be the perfect time to spotlight Facebook’s own Mark Zuckerberg.

Born to Jewish parents, Zuckerberg describes himself as an atheist. He excelled academically throughout high school and college, though he dropped out of Harvard University after his sophomore year to focus on the Facebook project. But hey, we’re all familiar with his climb to success. I’d like to focus on what he’s done since he’s been successful.… read more.
